The National Federation Of The Blind Community Service Division is a Proud Division of the National Federation of the Blind (NFB), the oldest, largest, and most influential membership organization of blind people in the United States.
The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you want; blindness is not what holds you back.
The Community Service Division knows that Blindness is not what keeps us from contributing our talents and skills to solving our country’s most pressing problems via community service. We know that community service can be a tool to address the over 70 percent unemployment rate which affects the blind. We also know that service is a way to change the perception our sighted peers have of the blind as those who are unable to give to one that respects, values, and expects us to give back by serving in our communities. Finally, we know that community service affords all who participate an opportunity to learn about oneself, the issues faced in one’s community/country, and the chance to do something about those societal issues, and we encourage all to do just that.
